Smiths News funds new broadcasting unit for Swindon 105.5

Wednesday 22nd July 2015

Smiths News officially ‘hands over’ a new mobile staging and broadcasting unit to local community radio station, Swindon 105.5 FM.

Volunteers from Swindon 105.5 attended along with Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon and employees from Smiths News to watch the unveiling by Jonathan Bunting, Managing Director of Connect News & Media at Smiths News’ head office, Kembrey Park on Wednesday 22 July 2015.

Fully funded by Smiths News, the new mobile broadcasting unit has been fitted with state-of-the-art electrical equipment to help Swindon 105.5 continue to raise its profile in the town, as well as maintain its physical presence at events in and around Swindon.

Swindon 105.5 serves the town, delivering programmes made by groups and individuals for the whole community. They work with numerous hardworking and committed volunteers, and provide training at all levels – from school placements to community groups.

Each year, Smiths News’ community work continues, supporting local communities and charities as part of its corporate responsibility programme, Community Link-Up.  Having forged close links with Swindon 105.5, Jonathan Bunting visited the radio station earlier this year to find out how the company could support the station. Talking about working with Swindon 105.5, Bunting said:

“When I met Shirley Ludford, the radio station’s manager and some of the volunteers, I was blown away by their dedication, support and the impact the station makes to individuals and the community. Shirley showed me their current mobile broadcasting unit and it was clear that it needed replacing to enable them to continue broadcasting outdoors and being active in the community. I was delighted to offer Smiths News’ support in funding a new one.”

At the presentation on Wednesday 22 July, Shirley Ludford, Station Manager, Swindon 105.5 said:

“At Swindon 105.5 we are passionate about engaging with all aspects of our community, and as the town’s community radio service, we’re also passionate about getting out and about as much as possible.

This is an extremely generous gesture by Smiths News, and on behalf of all our volunteers, I give huge thanks to the team who have worked hard to make this facility come to life, with such exciting results”.
