Smiths News over 50s football tournament is a huge success

Monday 8th June 2015

On Sunday 16 teams from the Nottingham area took part in an over 50s football tournament, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Held at Carlton Town Football grounds on 31 May, the tournament targeted the mature footballing community and raised an awareness of retaining an active interest in the sport amongst the older generation.

This is a National Initiative supported by the local FA and charities such as Age UK and SAGA, and is gaining popularity amongst mature football players.

Organised by Smiths News’ Derek Hattersley, the event attracted over 100 players from as far as Mansfield and Leicester and was a great success, raising £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Derek received great feedback after the matches and is hoping to hold the event again next year: “The tournament demonstrates that the older generation are still of good use to society and can have a positive impact on community spirit. It is all the more reason to hold events like the Smiths News tournament and use it to good effect by raising money for local charities. My personal thanks go to Rob Drummond, who supported the event from the start and provided the kit for the teams.”

The day ended with an awards ceremony, where Barnsley were presented with the winning cup by ex-Nottingham MP Alan Simpson.

Magazine Operations Manager Sam Lucas supported the event and added: “We had a fantastic turnout and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.”
