Smiths News PLC's charity bike ride commences

Friday 22nd June 2012

Smiths News PLC will be cheering on and wishing colleagues good luck when 13 members of staff set off on a 375 mile charity bike ride from their Southampton depot to Newcastle on Sunday 24 June.

The ‘S to N’ bike ride is part of the Group’s ‘Community Week’ initiative, which has seen all staff across the business getting involved in raising money for charity and working in their local communities. This year, the company is aiming to raise £70,000 for communities and charities.

During the six day bike ride, the 13 cyclists will stop off on route to call in at their Swindon head office as well as Jaffe and Neal, an independent book store in Chipping Norton, who was supplied with 23,000 books last year from Bertrams, the book wholesaler which is owned by Smiths News PLC.

The cyclists will also be joined by seven colleagues along the route who have decided to take part in the bike ride for a day to support their colleagues. Nick Gresham, Chief Financial Officer of Smiths News PLC and Jaffe and Neal owner Patrick Neale will make up two of the day riders, along with staff from various departments across the business.

Each cyclist is required to raise at least £2,000 in sponsorship for the charity of their choice. Some of the charities include; Marie Curie, the Alzheimer’s Society, Cancer Research UK, RSPCA, and NewstrAid (the industry’s own charity which supports retailers and their families when they fall on hard times).

Ian Tallamy, Enterprise Systems Manager, who is based at the company’s head office is one of the cyclists taking part. Ian said:

“I love cycling, and I think that taking part in the bike ride is a great way of keeping fit, seeing the countryside, and it’s a great opportunity to raise money for Newstraid. I’ve worked in the newspaper and magazine industry for a long time. Therefore, I would like to contribute towards a charity which helps people who have worked in this industry. Over the years, I’ve come to realise how valuable Newstraid is to its beneficiaries.”

When the cyclists reach the finish line at the Company’s Newcastle depot they will be greeted by local MP Ian Mearns as well as colleagues, family and friends waiting to congratulate them.
