Smiths News Retail Team lends a hand at local sorting facility

Friday 18th November 2016

Eight members of staff from Smiths News spent the day at the Birmingham Sorting Facility for Acorn’s Children’s Hospice Trust.

The facility holds all the donated stock to be sold in the charity’s 50 retail shops – from as far north as Telford down to Cheltenham. The team of volunteers sorted through the donations, making sure everything was in good order for resale.

“We really wanted to do something to help out in our community,” explained volunteer Alex Lewis. “It’s great that the Company offers a policy where employees are able to get involved in volunteering initiatives like this – it was such a great day!”

Every single item gets sorted into its relevant category – ladies, men’s and children’s wear, plus accessories and household goods. Although the volunteers were a little stumped at trying to place a set of false moustaches!

Centre Manager Tom Bateman was delighted to have the extra pairs of hands:

“The team was fantastic and we enjoyed hosting everyone. As for the figures, the team sorted 245 bags of raw stock and produced 74 bags ready for resale. If 12 items in each bag was sold for an average price of £3.00, the income generated would be around £2,600 – which is an amazing result! On behalf of Acorn’s, thanks to everyone who offered their time to experience what we do.”

The Acorn’s Children’s Hospice Trust offers a network of care for life-limited or life-threatened babies, children and young people and their families across the heart of England. It also provides short breaks, emergency and end of life care at each of its three hospices.
